IVF Tests And Procedures

In-vitro fertilization is a sequence of procedures that will help a female conceive a child. Females who cannot naturally give birth due to many reasons can see good success rates with the IVF process. This post will clearly explain the different IVF tests and procedures. Choosing the IVF process is a major life decision and therefore, get advice from your gynecologist in Velachery before proceeding with it.

What is In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF)?

IVF is a medical procedure that will aid a female in creating a family of her own. Some ailments or the age of the person can be a reason that does not let them give natural birth. In such cases, medical intervention is needed and that is IVF.

In this process, the mature eggs are collected and fertilized in a lab. Later, the embryo is planted in the uterus. Usually, an IVF cycle goes up to three weeks and can also be in stages as the gynecologist in Medavakkam deems fit. IVF can be done with the female’s own eggs and partner’s sperm or with a donor egg or sperm.

Tests before proceeding with IVF

Before the IVF procedure is started, there are a few tests to ensure everything is set for the treatment.

1 – Ovarian Reserve Tests

The priority in IVF treatment is the quality of the female’s eggs. In this step, the gynecologist in Madipakkam would observe the level of follicles, estrogen, and anti-mullerian hormone in the blood during the initial days of a menstruation period. These test results with an Ultrasound would show how the ovaries would behave when induced with fertility hormonal medications.

2 – Evaluation for infectious diseases

The couple will undergo screening to evaluate whether they have an infectious disease like HIV.

3 – Mock Embryo Transfer

In this step, the doctor would perform a mock embryo transfer to gauge the uterine cavity’s depth and to evaluate which method would work in planting the embryo in the uterus.

4 – Examination of the Uterine Lining

The uterine lining is very important to hold the embryo and further develop it. Here the doctor will conduct a sonohysterography to create an ultrasound of the uterine cavity.

Procedure of IVF

Once all the tests are successfully completed, the gynecologist in Adambakkam would start the process of In-vitro fertilization.

1 – Stimulation of the ovaries

In this first step, the female is given hormone injections to stimulate not just one but multiple eggs. It is done to increase the odds of getting a mature egg. A set of medications will be given for:

  • Ovary stimulation
  • Oocyte maturation
  • Preventing premature ovulation
  • Improving Uterine lining

The female will be in this process for about two to three weeks before the egg retrieval process can start.

2 – Egg Retrieval

This procedure can be done once 36 hours have elapsed from the final injection. Usually, a transvaginal ultrasound is used to assist the needle to the ovaries. However, if the ovaries cannot be reached, the doctor will use an abdominal ultrasound. The needle connected to a suction device will remove the eggs from the follicles.

3 – Fertilization

The doctor will perform fertilization in any one of the following methods:

  • Insemination – The mature eggs and sperm are put together and are incubated for some time.
  • Intracytoplasmic sperm injection – The sperm is directly injected into the egg.

4 – Embryo Transfer

The final step of the cycle is the Embryo transfer. Using a catheter, the embryo is placed in the uterus.
